The most eagerly awaited movie of the year is finally here, the movie which came as a ray of hope for the box office which had seen only 4 major hits, which include My name is Khan, Housefull, Rajneeti, Ishqiya, and 3 critical hits which include Peepli [Live], Udaan and Tere Bin Laden, out of the 180 films released so far. And the Movie lives upto its expectations becoming the highest grosser of all times in first week with collection of Rs. 81 crores, defeating the earlier No. 1- 3 Idiots.
A few questions you should ask before going for this movie: 1. Do you want pure Masala Entertainment? - YES; 2. Will you look for logic – NO; 3. Will you whistle when Sallu mia enthrals you with his performance – YES; 4. Will you dance to "Munni Badnaam hui" – YES. If all your answers match, then don’t wait for a min, just go and buy the tickets. For anybody who wants to know what is the on-screen definition of Bollywood, Dabangg is the movie. Dabangg means fearless. Someone who doesn’t care a damn! Sallu mia returns this EID with what can be called his most explosive performance to date. If you loved WANTED, then this movie is one step ahead of it.
STORY: Set in Uttar Pradesh, the film revolves around the life of Chulbul Pandey (apna Sallu), the most thunderously crackling character I've seen in a Bollywood film in months. Chulbul is cheerfully corrupt cop but not without honour. He steals from the bad guys and occasionally passes it on to the poor and calls himself Robin Hood Pandey. He delivers killer one-liners, dodges bullets like in Matrix, defeats dozens of armed gunmen with a water hose, keeps his glares on his back collar so that he can see his back as well and charmingly bulldozes the local beauty into marrying him. And how can I forget, he makes fart jokes as well which are very amusing. He doesn't get along with his step father (Vinod Khanna) and wasted-unemployed brother Makhi (Arbaaz Khan) but loves his mother (Dimple Kapadia) dearly. Set almost in a Sholay-like village setup, the goons fear Chulbul and their leader Cheddi Singh (Sonu Sood), a young politico, wants to have him dead. There's also his love interest, the reticent Rajo (Sonakshi). Though there's no compelling plot here, its just the way all these characters play off each other that's a joy to watch. The film starts off with a bang, drawing you into the story in minutes. The only negative is that it dips sharply before the interval but makes up in the second half. Also the climax is a little comical where Sallu’s shirt rips off his body from the sheer force of his muscles-just like The Incredible Hulk.
USP: The action sequences by Vijayan are stupendous and are sure to send the crowd hollering. Music is awesome. While Munni will make you dance, Tere Mast Mast Do Nain will make you feel romantic. But finally what is Dabangg? Its out and out Sallu movie. He looks outstanding, into the character and plays Chulbul Pandey with flamboyance. Sonakshi Sinha has an earthy, old-school sex appeal and looks beautiful. Debutant Director, Abhinav Kashyap directs a movie with almost no story line and delivers with ease. He takes you back to those old times in 70’s where the movie was all about the triumph of good over evil with dhishum dhishum fight scenes.
My favourite dialogue from the movie:
Cheddi Singh: 101 kamino ki bali di thi hamare maa baap ne, tab jaake hum paida hue the.
Chulbul Pandey: Unhi kamino ke bhagwan hai hum…..abhi badla lene aaye hain.
